How Pokemon Go is making Google Maps look… outdated!

When Pokemon Go launched in 2016, no one expected that beyond catching Pikachu in parks and squares, players would contribute to the creation of a map that could make Google Maps look like ’90s GPS tech.

Niantic Is Redefining Mapping

Niantic, the company behind Pokemon Go, has announced that it is using geospatial data collected from players to create a new, more comprehensive map. The goal? To surpass every other mapping system available today.

With over 10 million scanned locations and 1 million new scans each week, Niantic is building a 3D map that doesn’t rely on satellite images or vehicles but instead uses data from a pedestrian’s perspective. This means it can include locations overlooked by traditional mapping systems.

How It Works

Players scan locations using their phone cameras through the Scan feature. The collected data is transformed into a three-dimensional map capable of supporting new augmented reality (AR) experiences.

The process is optional, but the result? A map so detailed that even Magikarp could find its way!

Impact on Gaming

This technology isn’t just about maps. Niantic is leveraging it to develop AR experiences that transform the way we interact with games. Pokemon Go players can expect new features that make their daily adventures even more immersive.
