2XKO – The fighting game we (probably) expected from Riot

If someone had told you 5 years ago that the guys who made League of Legends would make a fighting game with rollback netcode, a tag system, and Darius throwing people around like sacks… you would have said “come on, sit tight, we’re still playing Urf”.
And yet. 2XKO (formerly Project L) is coming in 2025 to put Summoner’s Rift in 2D arenas and tell us: “Tag, wave dash, and leave ranked to LoL”.

2XKO in a nutshell:

  • Developer: Riot Games (a.k.a. the fathers of tilt)
  • Gameplay: 2v2 Tag-Team Fighter
  • Buttons: 6 – Light, Medium, Heavy, Special 1, Special 2, Tag
  • Netcode: Rollback (finally something right)
  • Platforms: PC, & soon PS5, Xbox Series
  • Cost: Free to Play (but brace yourselves for skins)

The core mechanic of the game is 2v2. You pick two champs (no, you can’t play Ahri twice, sorry) and enter the ring. One is “on point”, the other comes for an assist, handshake tag or burst change – which in 2XKO is called Dynamic Save, but we all know what “come here now because I’m going to die” is.

The “Fuse” system: synergy with builds

Each duo also has a fuse – a passive that changes the way you play. For example

  • Fury: more damage when you’re low on HP
  • Double Down: your two ultimates join hands and become a nuclear option
  • Freestyle: second tag in the combo, because one isn’t enough

It’s like playing ARAM but with burst options.

Quarter-circle-free moves – because no one remembers how Hadouken works

The roster so far:

✔ Ekko (with the classic rewind playstyle)
✔ Ahri (yes, with orbs)
✔ Darius (king of the jungle)
✔ Jinx (will bring chaos)
✔ Yasuo (one wasn’t enough in LoL)
✔ Illaoi (with tentacles – chill)
✔ Braum (grandpa support with a shield, but bulk af)

Duo Mode: Play with a friend, or watch them sell you on stream

The game supports real Duo play. One plays the first character, the other the second. And when you tag, you switch controls.

Free to Play.

The only thing that’s certain is that the game is free. What does this mean in practice: character rotation; full roster DLC; battle pass with Yasuo’s Edgelord V2 skin? We don’t know. But we do know that Riot = monetization masterclass, so prepare your wallets.

TL;DR:

2XKO is a tag-team fighter that takes the LoL madness and throws it into a stylized, modern, accessible fighting game. With rollback netcode, easy inputs, and a focus on duo synergy, it looks like Riot is serious about it.

If it doesn’t work out, it’ll be the most stylized whiff punish in fighting game history.
